How healthy is your summertime pool water for your teeth?

summertime pool tipsIt has been HOT outside and when the weather is like that many kids like to go swimming.  That would be kids of all ages of course.  We meet lots of people who during the summer swim in their pools everyday.  Those of you who are my age can remember the blonde kids with green hair from swimming so much with too much chlorine in the water.  You don't see that too much anymore.  But what affect does a daily dose of pool water chlorine have on your teeth?

Chlorine is used in pool to help kill germs that want to grow in the water.  That is a good thing.  But it can burn your eyes, and too much of it can brown stain your teeth.  Also, the chlorine can slowly weaken the enamel on your teeth making you more likely to get cavities.  Having summer fun can definately harm your teeth if you swim a lot.

So what can you do?  First, make sure the ph of your pool water is in the correct range.  To0 high a ph makes the water a weak acid being harder on your eyes, skin and teeth.  Those things are still harmed if the ph  is too low.  Hit the middle ground of about 7.5, in that range.and you should be ok.

Next, be sure to hydrate.  Being in the pool and the weather burns off your bodies natural water supply so even though you are surrounded by water make sure to drink your tap or bottled water.  Also, try to keep your mouth closed and don't let the pool water get on your teeth.  If you notice some brown stains on your teeth, give us call for a tooth cleaning.  Don't let your summertime pool fun harm your pretty smile Also, don't forget your sunscreen and lip balm.
