5 Things You Didn't Know About Your Teeth

5 things you didnt know about your teeth

  1. Sour Is Just As Bad As Sweet, If Not Worse-Just because a food doesn't have sugar in it doesn't mean it is good for you.  Look at the  ph of the food, especially liquids.  Low pH foods or high acid foods will cause real problems.  Sugar free candy is ok but the high acid level is as harmful to the surface of the tooth.  Chewing a gum containing xylitol (ie Trident) will balance out that ph and get things back to normal very quickly.
  2. It might be the hardest subsance in the body, but Enamel Can Fracture with the right stress.-Repeatly chewing hard foods like ice or hard candy will eventually cause enamel to break.  Another cause of this is tongue piercings or lip piercings.  Biting down on  the hard plastic or metal is terrible for your teeth.  It is also a good idea not to bite on your fork.
  3. You Can Lose A Tooth At Any Age-Some people are not born with all of their teeth.  The most common missing teeth are the wisdom teeth but upper lateral incisors are next. Some studies show that about 30% of Americans wear dentures at 75 years old.  The most common cause of tooth loss is cavities and gum disease.
  4. It Is Possible To Have Too Much Fluoride-The right amount of fluoride in your water or food will definately make your teeth stronger.  But too much fluoride can be harmful.  Only take the amount in your water and approved toothpaste unless specifically instructed by your dentist.  Too much fluoride can change the color of your teeth.
  5. If Not Properly Cleaned, Braces Can Cause Cavites-Braces can be very hard to clean with all the wires and brackets in the way of your toothbrush.  If you don't keep them clean, you will get cavities underneath your braces.  Nothing will ruin your get the braces off day faster that seeing decay under the brackets with they come  off.  Work very hard to clean yourself well when wearing braces.
