Why Do My Wisdom Teeth Hurt?

At around the age of 18 years old it is a common issue that a persons wisdom teeth or 3rd molars try to erupt into your mouth.  For many people their jaw is just not long enough to accommodate that last tooth.  What happens many times is that the tooth erupts to its proper position and height but it is not enough for the gum to uncover the tooth.  Something called pericoronitis can then occur.  Because the gum is still over the top of the tooth, food and debris can pack down the backside of the tooth.  That gets infected, swells and causes severe pain.  This is something we see in the 17-21 year old range all the time.

The only long term treatment of to have the wisdom teeth removed.  It is possible to just calm  the infected gum down but the infection will re-occur until the 3rd molar is removed.  Do yourself a favor when this happens and have all your wisdom removed.
