How Do My Teeth Get Stained?

This is why your teeth stainA very common comment we hear from our patients is this: "Why are my teeth darker than they used to be?"  There are a lot of reasons your teeth either stain or become darker but the easy answer  is life.  Nothing on your body stays the same and your teeth are the same way.  You are constantly using them and exposing them to foods and drinks that darken and stain.

Do you drink sweetened tea?  That is the worst.  It has a very high sugar content, low pH and puts some of the worst stains on your teeth.  How much coffee do you drink?  The dark color wants to darken your teeth and the stain if tough to remove.  Red wine is the same thing.

The combination of a smoker and heavy coffee drinker makes your hygienist shudder.  You are a tough cleaning for sure.  Other causes are antibiotic use as a child and your genetics.

The American Academy Of Cosmetic Dentisry recommends regular cleaning to keep the stain off and teeth whitening to brighten your smile.  Click here to learn more about tooth whitening.
