How much do you know about your tongue?  Not much is the usual answer.  Let's review some interesting fun facts about your tongue.

  • Your tongue looks like on solid muscle but it is actually eight different muscles working together.
  • The small bumps you see on your tongue are not taste buds but are small papillae.  Each papillae can have several thousand taste buds it in.
  • The life cycle of a taste bud is about 14 days.  They are constantly being replaces by new ones.
  • As you age, some taste buds stop replacing themselves.  That means you lose some taste as you age.
  • You have five official tastes:  sweet, sour, bitter, salty and savory.  Surprisingly, spicy is not a taste but it is a pain signal.  It is your tongue telling your brain that it hurts.
  • Every part of your tongue can taste all five flavors, but the sides of the tongue are more sensitive than the middle.
  • There are people who are extra sensitive to tastes.  They are called supertasters and are more likely to be a women than a man.
  • It is impossible to swallow your tongue.  It is sucurely anchored to the bottom of your mouth
